  • 108- Social Emotional Learning and Trauma Session #1

I learned that social emotional learning and understanding trauma play a huge role in student success. The statistics really stood out to me, like only 25% of students using positive words to describe school, while there’s an 83% increase in social skills when SEL is part of the day, and most students who succeed academically also have strong emotional intelligence. I also learned the importance of building self awareness through activities like journaling, show and tell, and “would you rather,” along with doing daily check ins so students feel seen and heard. Creating a classroom where students feel safe expressing their opinions is key, and relationship strategies like talking, listening, showing, navigating, and seeking help all support stronger connections and a more positive learning environment.

I can use this while subbing by creating a positive and supportive environment where students feel comfortable and respected. I will do simple check ins, listen to students, and encourage them to express themselves while using a calm and understanding approach. I can also build quick relationships by talking, listening, and showing support, which helps students feel safe and more ready to learn.
