108 Social And Emotional Learning – Session 2
Session 2 focuses on that aspect of teaching students social awareness baseline being empathy and considering the perspective of others. I found the section on social skills very interesting as its not a skill a child has or doesn’t have its instead shows if they need refinement and it can continue to develop with age and can be learned with effort and practice. As crazy as empathy as a practice for a child can be it can be crucial especially as a reminder with age. Consideration of others even in moments of conflict is a very valuable skill for children to grow in. Skills in classroom can be used K-12 and its our jobs to set expectations on social skills and help children grow in them. Self regulation is the biggest gift we can give. Showing students the difference between behavioral and emotional teaching them circle of control, personal mantas and being observant in their needs can really set them up for success. Its important once a child identifies their emotion they are greeted with helpful tools and skills to work through and reregulate. Every child is different!
