After learning about the 5 pillars of SEL and knowing a few of my co workers are also in this training I am very excited to get this implemented ASAP in our school. Self awareness is something taught very early on but can either become a second thought or in extreme cases lead to anxiety. Social skills are not a given and as an educator its important to remind myself that kids don’t know what they don’t know and do allow that grace with them as they learn to be more accommodating.

Consideration can be quite a large concept for children to digest so I really like the sentence fillers. Relationship management is very important and seems to grow in importance with age. Teaching kids how to work with others and how to repair and say sorry and hear the other side when in a dispute. Social awareness is again having that empathetic view towards others and how to then choose what to say or do. I think social awareness is something at times that has to be retaught consistently but very important. self regulation is the biggest concept takeaway from this course for me, especially working with teenagers who either react big or suppress emotions entirely.

Knowing the difference between behavioral and emotional self regulation is very important for even the teachers. Circle of control can help those really anxious kiddos while personal mantras and positive refocus may help the wilder ones. Its important to observe and know students to pre plan a way out from a outburst and what is best going to help them. Once implemented monitoring that outlet and reflecting if it is helping the student is crucial.

Lastly, responsible decision making only gets more and more important with age. The process of analysis and figuring out what are the options, what do i know and not know and what are the potential consequences or rewards. Its a very important biological reminder that children’s brains are still actively developing and they might not be able to think as broadly as adults can but they are trying. Refusal skills and Goal setting and pro vs con are all tools I know we really try to teach those middle schoolers and in general if they have a crazy idea or decision planning helping them walk through the options and often times potential consequences too.. Human first student second is a lovely mantra I will be adding to my classroom!
