Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
This week’s featured education topic is: What is SEL and why is it important? SEL stands for Social Emotional Learning. It has become a current buzz term in education circles, especially since Covid and all the emotional and social needs that are a result from this time period for students. Many topics fall under this category and school districts are finding funds to purchase programs and/or even hiring full-time certified positions that classify as a specials period. Today’s students are not the same as they were 30 years ago! They come to the school system with a lot more social and emotional needs and concerns. I believe along with the Covid season, some students do not have a solid and stable family unit they can glean character and social stability. More so than ever, students need to be taught social skills, expectations and how to regulate their emotions.
One of my favorite programs is called Sources of Strength. It takes a look at the various sources of strength individuals have and dives deeper into each category. This combines basic social skills and emotional regulation by looking at a positive approach to recognizing strengths and weaknesses rather than offering students a list of things not to do. Self-awareness is taught as well as some strategies and techniques to draw from many areas of strength. Another thing I like to do is to choose from lesson plans that I have created as a behavior specialist. I made a crate with file folders (old fashioned, I know!) and based on student needs that is a source I draw from. Some of the files include topics like; expectations, preparedness, honesty, anger and self-control, integrity, problem-solving, feelings, doing hard things, manners, bullying, responsibility, respect and so on. Inspiration
The verse that speaks to me and gives me inspiration this week is: Matthew 5; 16 (In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.) This verse is really core to the development of Lighthouse Consulting which relates to His light and how it can shine through onto others. I envision a lighthouse and relate it to myself as a vessel that He can use to shine His light through onto others.
Tips/Tricks/Techniques
The tip for this week is: Time Management and Organization can help you maintain your Sanity! If you can manage your time wisely and have your life organized, it makes the ups and downs that are bound to happen more tolerable and able to overcome!
