Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
This week’s featured education topic is: What is MTSS and the tiered approach all about? MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. It consists of 3 tiers that form a triangle. Tier 1 at the bottom pertains to all students in both academic and behavior supports. Instruction at this level would be taught school-wide with all constituents involved in the instruction and follow-through processes. This tier would be the main curriculum expected in all grade levels and the school-wide behavior support system. (ex. PBIS)
The second tier would be approximately 15 % of the school population and pertain to those students who need and could benefit from a small group intervention. Often the instruction at this level encompass groups of 3-5 with similar ability or need. (ex. Phonics, self-control) Interventions at this level should be documented and the flow of this process should look like this: 1) gather baseline data, 2)determine need, 3)group students, 4)intervene with a small group intervention, 5)progress monitor using 3-5 data points, 6)re-evaluate after 6-8 weeks and compare to the baseline data, 7)adjust groups accordingly-out of intervention and back to tier 1, implement new intervention or move to tier III.
The third tier would be approximately 3-5 % of the school population and pertain to those students who need intensive individualized support. Adaptations to the main curriculum or interventions are necessary and often include but are not limited to special education students. Students in the top portion of the triangle usually have FBA’s or Formal Behavior Assessments completed as a baseline of data of interventions and various data to base decisions on. These students need 10-30 times as much practice as their peers to learn new information and often need IEP’s (Individual Education Plans) or BIP’s (Behavior Intervention Plans).

The tip for this week is: Building Relationships is the key to success no matter what field you are in. In education, building relationships with students from day one will prevent behavior issues in the future. Find something/anything to connect with each and every student! They desire and need to feel a connection long before they will actually learn from you!
