Classroom Management
This week’s featured education topic is: What does classroom management look like and why is it important? Once the school has a school-wide system in place, the classroom can go a little deeper with specific expectations. The classroom is still considered a place for Tier 1 instruction that sets the focus on expectations. Teachers teach specific behaviors with clear, consistent and high expectations through modeling and role playing. Student’s love watching their teacher act out what they should and should not do. Some must haves for the classroom are visual charts, contracts, voice level charts, promise chart and seating arrangements.
Classrooms should utilize a variety of reward systems for whole group, small groups and individuals. Whole group reward systems might be earning points when working effectively as a whole group or receiving a compliment while outside the classroom in the hallways or specials classes. When a desired number of points are achieved the class could earn a privilege, like extra recess minutes, class pajama day, free choice and so on. Small group reward systems might look like each group earning points as a small team. For example, the first group with a clean floor, or first group to be quiet and ready to line up and so on. At the end of the week or month the group with the most points receive a prize from the treasure box. This encourages students to work together as a small team.
An ongoing reinforcement system needs to be in place in the classroom. Relationships must be established before teaching and learning are maximized. Educators must teach, reteach, reward and reinforce all the expectations and academics they want to have accomplished. A positive reward system in place can be very effective. A few things this might entail are positive calls home, certificates, privileges, an opportunity box, and obtaining class goals. Parent calls that are positive really build a sense of team and are fun to make. Certificates of praise can provide a tangible item for students to take home and share with parents the good things they have achieved for the day.

Inspiration
The verse that speaks to me and gives me inspiration this week is: Psalm 37; 4 which reads, Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires. Many times during my quiet time I like to begin my prayer time with thanking the Lord for the many things he has blessed my life with. When my heart is in a thankful state, my wants and problems seem so small. Throughout the day I find myself thanking the Lord for all the little things; even cool looking clouds or a day with no wind!
Tips/Tricks/Techniques
The tip for this week is: Take time for yourself. It is essential to have some down time to take care of yourself whether it be for health or peace or just to breathe! I dedicate one day per month to self-care. For me, I feel rejuvenated with reading for pleasure and not just information, getting a massage, taking a bubble bath, getting my nails done, hair done, FaceTime with grandkids, clean house, take a nap, meet a friend for coffee, going on a walk, visiting family and basically just not having a schedule with a to do list that never ends.
